The contact hypothesis goes online?

Consider the equal status contact hypothesis of intergroup relations, which proposes that routine contact with others in a peaceful, functional setting causes people to become less prejudiced against those from different backgrounds, and even to abandon previously held stereotypes. But as we know, our everyday interactions and tasks are increasingly happening via the internet and other digital media, and it is not yet clear how these virtual settings for work, school (including this very online course), shopping or socializing may affect attitudes towards ethnic/racial minorities. Considering your own experience online, do you think that the contact hypothesis still holds today? Explain how you see digital technology-mediated interactions affecting prejudiced attitudes in a positive or negative way. Can you provide an illustrative example?
