General Outline for Part A
The book report will be 12 pages in length (excluding Abstract, list of references, and any appendices).
Cover Page and Abstract – 150 words that summarize the entire paper, including analysis and
conclusion. Include the Honor Code and type your name.
Table of Contents – lists ALL subparts of the report.
Introduction (~1 page) – Interesting, engaging introduction to the topic; frames your entire report.
Review of Book and Case (~3-4 pages) – Provides reader with a summary of the book and overview of
the case. Covers the most relevant and important details in summary fashion, not a chapter-by-chapter
(tedious) description. Section should include comments and critiques of author’s coverage of the case; this
requires outside research.
Theoretical Analysis (~5 pages) – Choose one of three theoretical models presented in class (Hickey
Trauma Control, Athens #1, Athens #2) and provide an analysis of serial murder, applying your case as an
example. You will rely heavily on class materials and lectures; also draw upon outside sources, at least
eight of which need to be academic. See detailed requirements below. This section is critical to
demonstrating your ability to understand and analyze serial murder within a specific theoretical framework.
Conclusion and Closing Comments (~2 pages) – Summarizes report and discusses usefulness of the
book in adding to our knowledge of serial murder in general. Provides a discussion of the “big idea,” as
well as connections to the “north star” for this course and/or your own personal north star. Answer the “So
what” question; why is this important to society?
List of References – Use APA Lite Guidelines for in-text citations and list of references. You are required
to draw upon a minimum of twelve outside sources, at least ten of which must be academic.
Appendices – Attachments of whatever you think will add to the interest and comprehensiveness of your
report.
