Short Paper – Future of Bioethics

Write a paper that (1) identifies the main aim of the chosen article, (2) outlines key reasons the
author offers in support, and (3) states key considerations the author identifies that would seem to
disfavor the author’s position as well as (4) offer the author’s response to those considerations.
The main task is to extract the reasons in support of the author’s key position and not simply
summarize the article.
For many, a summary is usually a condensed form of the content of a paper or article. Here we
are looking to demonstrate critical thinking (e.g., whether you can identify the main aim of the
paper as not all aims are the main one; whether you can identify different voices – not all
considerations are the authors) and logical reasoning (e.g., whether you can determine what
reasons best support the main aim of the paper; whether you can identify the reasons that would
seem to disfavor an aim, the main aim, or reasons in support of an aim).
No other sources required or expected. Do not add your reaction or arguments pro or con about
the content of the paper. Include in text citations as appropriate as well as a single bibliography
entry for the article provided following the American Medical Association (AMA)
manual of
style.
This paper is at minimum 2 pages with standard formatting (1” margins, 12 pt font) plus a title
page and bibliography. For title page include name, class #, section #, and topic of paper. You
may write more than two pages and certainly not less than two pages.
Up to a ½ letter grade reduction will be included in you paper grade for inappropriate citation or
bibliography style (e.g., 3.15 (B+) to a 3.0 (B)).
I strongly recommend SVSU’s Writing Center at the Zahnow Library (and it’s online version) as
a place to help further develop your writing, help on citation style, or a place to get you started.
Also, there are texts available in the library (and online resources) on writing philosophy papers.

Due date for the paper can be found on the course schedule. Turn in by the due date to CANVAS (which will
create an account for you on Turnitin.com.
