Based on the country Mexico and theme of focus Health, write a 200-250 word (max 250 words) Synopsis. The Synopsis should contain a brief outline of the focus of the paper, the issue (or problem) at hand, and the trajectory of the argument you seek to make. Read the Briefing Paper Information requirements attached when preparing the Synopsis. I have attached the instructions that include the sources that need to be used. If you find better sources that can be added to the external sources but I provided some good sources already for the external sources in the attached document. If you want to pick a different theme from the them list that is fine as well, however, I chose health because there appears to be alot of scholarly work written about the impact of globalization and neoliberalism on the health of exploited labour force like female Mexican workers in the tortilla industry.
Thank you.
Step 1: Select from the list provided below one country of the Global South where neoliberal reforms have been initiated. Investigate how the processes of Globalization and changes in the material economy there have impacted the lives of either poor urban or rural women in this country.
Mexico
Focus on just one theme from Part 2 of the Curriculum (Thematic Study of the Gendered Impact of Globalization),
womens integration into the labour market (informal or in Export Processing Zones),
migration,
health,
agriculture
in the intimate realm of social relations.
Imagine that you will be writing a briefing paper that you hope to present to your local MP / House of Commons (government) just before a summit titled Benefits of Market Reforms is to take place in Ottawa (Canadas capital and Parliament Government).
Step 2:
Based on the country Mexico and theme Health of focus selected, write and submit your 200-250 word (max 250 words) Synopsis. The Synopsis should contain a brief outline of the focus of your paper, the issue (or problem) at hand, and the trajectory of the argument you seek to make. You are advised to read the Briefing Paper Information requirements (see below) when preparing your Synopsis.
Please refer to the Course Timeline for all relevant due dates/times.
Briefing Paper Information
Your job in presenting the brief is to show the multidimensional gendered impact of market reforms. You do that by taking up a case study of one country. Your brief has to be precise in its argument, provide a background or context, steer clear of jargon, and make a persuasive argument. Please use a third person voice in your writing.
The aim of your Briefing Paper is to equip your local MP (local government official) to:
Question the role of market reforms in improving the lives of women (and the larger population); and
Have Canada take the lead in reshaping policies and programs.
There are 4 parts to the Briefing:
Part 1: Give an overview of the changes that occurred in the services provided to the countrys populace such as in health, education, subsidies in food, transport, or housing due to the imposition of neoliberal reforms.
Part 2: Provide a broad outline about the gendered impact of market reforms. Here, discuss how womens lives in general have been reshaped due to market reforms. You can discuss ability to access employment, health services, or education, to list a few. Discuss the impact of lifting of subsidies on increasing the burden on womens productive and reproductive labour.
Part 3: Speak specifically on just one category of women rural or urban. Discuss one particular topic such as agriculture, migration, informal or formal economy, or social relations in relation to the impact on womens lives locally. Remember to bring in an intersectional approach that brings in race, class, ethnicity, and/or religion into the analysis.
Part 4: Offer concrete suggestions and policy changes that the Canadian government should undertake to address the issues at stake, offer culturally appropriate interventions that improve the lives of women in that particular sphere, and build transnational solidarity linkages between Canada and the Global South. While offering suggestions, keep in mind readings from Weeks Three and Four about western saviour narratives and avoid language of help and charity as compared to a human rights discourse. Your core arguments and data should clearly demonstrate the links between gender and globalization on one hand, and course themes on the other.
