Instructions and grading criteria for research essay
Scores will depend primarily on the relevance, accuracy, and intellectual content of your writing, but style is also important. Check spelling and grammar as carefully as possible, including punctuation and capitalization. My standard for evaluation of writing is high, and your essay must have few if any typos or other such errors in order to qualify for a score of 70% or better. When reading and scoring essays, I will look for:
Formal writing style with correct spelling and grammar
Logical organization of paragraphs
Appropriate balance of factual information, analysis, and interpretation
Length: 500-1000 words (equivalent to approximately 3-5 pages typed with lines double-spaced, 1-inch margins)
Customary academic manuscript format (see sample paper below)
Sources listed in bibliography at end of essay
Direct quotations not to exceed 10% of essay, documented with footnotes or endnotes
Electronic document in PDF format, uploaded to Blackboard (shared Google docs are not acceptable)
My research essay’s subject is the Holocaust and the story of Anne Frank. Her diaries themselves will be one of the main sources, but you will also need as least one scholary book, such as a biography or more general history of the holocaust, for additional context and background information.
