The Humanistic Tradition Week 2 questions (P. 136-248)
Please read through the text and answer the following questions. Unless otherwise noted, please use complete sentences. Also, there may be questions involving more than a sentence or two to fully realize the scope of the concept. I will include word count minimums in parentheses following those particular queries.

1) In many ways, the United States has been compared to the early Roman Empire. Name three aspects of Roman culture America has adopted or adapted. Note: these may be political, artistic, social, science, etc. (50 words min.)
2) What best describes the governmental leadership in the time of “the Caesars?” In your opinion, what are the most positive and negative aspects of this kind of leadership? (25 to 50 words min.)
3) After carefully reading Seneca’s “On Tranquility of Mind” on page 144, answer the question at the bottom of the right hand column, “What, in his (Seneca’s) view, is humanitys greatest source of affliction? Why or why don’t you agree with this? In your opinion, what do you consider humanity’s greatest affliction?
4) What did Roman artists introduce in their paintings advancing visual arts in the west? (25 words min.)
5) Who was the most famous early Chinese philosopher? What does his analects tell us about the context of the period? (25 words min.)
6) In your opinion, is the Great Wall of China a work of art, or simply a long wall? Explain. (25 words min.)
7) Name five innovations that took place during the Han Dynasty. (You may use a list here as long as you indicate the page number following the innovation)
8) Why has Chinese architecture not stood the test of time as well as Greek or Roman works? Aside from the Great Wall, what proof do we have of their building marvels? (25 words min.)
9) According to our text, identify the three cultural traditions Christianity grew from. What did Christianity acquire through from each? (25 words min.)
10) Based on the four noble truths of the Buddha, explain the positive aspect of “the extinction of self” as the highest level of attainment? Why might this spiritual goal appear less desirable than heaven or life everlasting in Christianity? (25 words min)
11) How did “the church” influence architecture? Explain. (25 words min.)
12) Who is the equivalent of Muhammad in the Christian and Buddhist Faiths? (short answer)
13) Islam traditionally is a “state sponsored religion.” (page 235) Can you think of any other religions where the same may hold true? Explain. (a sentence or two is fine)

Name three specific similarities these three world religions share in terms of beliefs.
Is the chief difference between these three based on the attainment of an afterlife, serving a higher power, or respecting fellow human beings? Explain your answer.
