JACS CITATION Format
Spending just a small portion of the paper on science. Once again, discussion of scientific facts should make up a minimum of 80% of your paper. If you spend a large portion of your paper discussing the history of your food, you haven’t discussed enough of the science. Likewise, your paper should not have characters, a plot, a narrator, or any number of other literary devices that are used in a story.
Pedagogical comments: Making comments about the paper’s topic, goal, etc. Your paper should not have the phrases “the topic of this paper is…” or “the goal of this paper is…” In fact, if any sentence contains the phrase “this paper” you should rewrite that sentence.
Using first or second person pronouns: I, me, my, you, your, our, us, we, and other such pronouns have no place in a science paper. If any sentence in your paper has any of these pronouns, rewrite or eliminate the sentence. One pronoun will cause your Style score to drop from category 4 to category 2. Any additional pronouns will cause your Style score to drop to zero.
Opinions: This isn’t a persuasive essay, so your opinions don’t belong. You’re not trying to get the reader to enjoy your chosen food item. You’re presenting facts about the chemistry of your chosen food item.
