The Neuropsychosocial Approach

The neuropsychosocial approach can be used not only for mental illness, but for understanding any human phenomenon. For example, one of my favorite pastimes is cooking: I enjoy the skills, practices, tastes, and relationships that are fostered through this activity. From a neural perspective, my dopeminergic reward systems are activated when I cook, which provide a feedback loop that this is enjoyable to me and I should do it again. From the psychological perspective, the creative and cognitive challenge engage my information-processing and my abilities foster my self-talk and self-image. From a social perspective, my enjoyment of cooking has been reinforced due to the feedback loops I receive from my husband and children about my efforts. At the same time, this aspect of the social domain exists in a wider cultural context that sends mixed messages about men who cook for their family.

What about you? Choose a hobby, activity, or aspect of your personality and present it to us using the neuropsychosocial lens. Please do not include maladaptive behaviors or mental illness in this particular discussion forum.
