Miller’s work is also the oldest book that we will be reading and discussing this semester. Along those lines, what do you think this book shows about the state of the field of colonial American history in the early 1950s? How is Miller defining colonial America? Which peoples and places is he including or excluding?
I also wondered what this book reveals about Miller’s methods as an intellectual historian. How does he try to access the thoughts and views of the Puritans? And what may be some of the limitations in his approach to writing the intellectual history of early America? I look forward to hearing your thoughts about the book.
