Essay 2: Social Norms
Topic
The paper should focus on a social media posting(Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, Tik-Tok,Snapchat) that reflects a social norm.
Although the parts do not form a unified, traditional five-paragraph essay, each section must
develop a central point, follow a clear line of thought, and come to a close with a conclusion.
THE ROUGH DRAFT ATTATCHED IS THE TOPIC I HAVE BEEN CHOSEN TO DO: “Karen having a meltdown”
Part 1: A Definition
Provide a short definition of social norms. In the course of the definition, include an example to support and illustrate your point. The definition should develop and follow a clear line of thought. (It should be at least one page in length.).
Do not quote a dictionary.
Part 2: A Description
Describe the posting. The description must develop a dominant impression; that must underscore the image’s relationship to a particular norm. The second part (the description) shows that the topic fits the prompt.
Focus on the posting.
Part 3:An Analysis
Develop an analysis of the rhetorical context. For this topic, the community is of particular importance: a community determines norms. In the analysis, address the comments and the way in which they reflect the social norm is related to a specific norm.
Additionally, the paper must include
•a title that provides an insight into the topic and purpose,
•an image of the posting immediately beneath the title,
•a works cited documenting the posting
and the definition.
Rhetorical Context
If your paper does focus on one of these topics, then you have failed to address the rhetorical context.
NSFW
Your topic must be appropriate for a classroom (professional) setting. Avoid NSFW (not safe for workplace) topics— for example, postings dealing with abuse, violence, sex, as are postings advocating racism, sexism. If the posting is NSFW, then the paper will not have addressed the prompt, which explicitly states that it must be safe for the workplace. The paper will receive a failing grade. Other Topics to Avoid Do not settle on posts that address political or religious topics. The purpose of the paper is not to push a political agenda or proselytize.
If your paper does focus on a posting that falls within either category, it will have failed to address the prompt. Format The paper must be formatter according to MLA guidelines. It should
include a full header on only the first page
include a centered title
include your last name and the page number in the upper right-hand corner
be double spaced
include a works cited page with entries for the social media posting.
Documentation
The posting must be documented. Essays must be documented according to the MLA guidelines from the 9th edition of The MLA Handbook. For more, see the OWL at Purdue for the documentation of electronic sources.
