The Principles of Design
The principles of design are presented in chapter 5 of Living with Art and you will need to read and become familiar with each of the design principle. For this assignment you will identify eight different works of art that each logically include one of these principles of design: unity, variety, symmetrical balance, asymmetrical balance, emphasis, subordination, scale or proportion, and rhythm listed in chapter 5 (one different work of art for each visual principle of design, for a total of eight works of art for the assignment). The works of art you choose may incorporate more than one principle of design, but only one specific principle of design should be discussed for each work of art. You can select works of art from any chapter in the Living with Art text book EXCEPT CHAPTER 5 and each work of art chosen can only be used once for this assignment. For each of the eight works of art you select, you will need to include a written response to each of the following:
In bulleted format for each principle of design (unity, variety, symmetrical balance, asymmetrical balance, emphasis, subordination, scale or proportion, and rhythm), identify the title, artist, date, the page number from Living with Art that each work of art from our text is listed on, material(s), and region of the work of art, and the historical art movement for each artist (with an in-text citation for each of the historical art movements). An example of this is shown in the APA template.
In eight individual paragraphs of approximately 100-150 words each (one paragraph for each individual artwork and principle of design) discuss each principle of design and the work of art you have chosen that illustrates the principle of design. Paragraph content: For the introduction, more generally explain the relevant principle of design and discuss what is most important to know about it. Next transition to your chosen work of art and describe how the principle of design is reflected in the work of art. What can you identify and discuss in the work of art that connects to your chosen principle of design? What additional information is key for your reader to know? Conclude each paragraph by discussing how this understanding enhances our appreciation of the work of art. Give specific and detailed reasons to support your observations.
Relevant citation to the Living with Art text book should be included for each of the eight paragraphs. Citations to our text book should include page numbers for specificity.
This assignment will also be evaluated for proper writing mechanics, clear layout, proper use of art terminology, and academic tone. Assignment should be formatted according to APA including title and reference pages. The expected formatting for this assignment is shown in an attached APA template.
