The Prize Cat by E.J. Pratt poem analysis

Select the poem. Spend a little time perusing the poems recommended by your teacher.
Don’t simply select an ‘easy’ poem- you’re more likely to simply translate the poem in
simplistic ways rather than offer a deeper analysis of its meaning. Beware: one can easily
find oneself falling into the trap of simply reporting on favourite lines and offering banal
praise rather than pursuing a thoughtful, unified analysis.
2. Analyze the poem. Working with a google document copy of the poem you have shared
with your teacher (can see all edits), read and re-read the piece, making notes on and
highlighting stylistic choices around structure, syntax, diction, metaphor, imagery,
rhythm, rhyme, sound, stanzaic formations, symbols, punctuation, alliteration,
personification (any and every poetic device), tone, etc., looking for patterns upon which
to base an interpretation. Show these notes in the document. You will attach this
document to your final submission.
3. Interpret the poem. Having taken apart the poem’s stylistic features, develop a
thoughtful, nuanced interpretation of the poem’s thematic stakes. Do not simply
‘translate’ the literal action of the poem, but push deeper to suggest what stakes your
reading of the poem contains. Remember, it is not your task to ‘get’ the poet’s intention,
but to speak to what the poem can be made to say.
