Introduction
A succinct statement of what general social work problem
area you are proposing to study. You need to briefly describe the major issues
that your proposed research study will address and lay the broad foundation for
the problem area that leads to your proposed study. For example, if my research
problem is college students who struggle with anxiety and stress during the
school year then a problem statement could be:
EX: “The frequency of college students who are experiencing
anxiety and stress is increasing and leading to high college dropout mental
health issues.”
***Quality of life in elderly
individuals is often defined by physical health and functioning
abilities. More
elderly individuals live at home with greater functional abilities than those
in senior facilities. While the impact of physical abilities on overall QOL of
the elderly has been established, additional research is needed that examines
the role that loneliness and psychological conditions have on Quality of Life.
Purpose of the Problem
A background of your problem area to enable an informed
layperson to place your research problem in a context of common knowledge. This
section points out why your study is needed. Here, you would want to talk about
the epidemiology (statistics), etiology (causes), and sequela (effects of the
research problem on people, communities, & society as a whole).
Epidemiology
Here, you need to add statistics about your research
problem. What is the prevalence and incidence of the research problem? For
example, if my research problem is college students who struggle with anxiety
and stress during the school year then I would discuss the percentage of
college students that struggle with anxiety and stress in the New York or the
U.S.
Etiology (Causes)
Here, you need to discuss the known causes of the research
problem? How do these causes lead to the research problem? For example, if my
research problem is college students who struggle with anxiety and stress then
I would look at research on what causes college students to become anxious and
stressed, such as genetics, mental health issues, or disorganization.
Sequelae (Effects)
Here, you need to discuss the effects of the research
problem? What damage does it cause to a person, to others in his or her social
network, to the community, and to society as a whole? For example, if my
research problem is college students who struggle with anxiety and stress then
I would look at research on the effects of college student anxiety and stress,
such as lower grades, college dropout, family issues.
Significance of the Study
Clearly indicate what implications your study’s findings
will have for social work researchers,
practitioners, administrators,
educators, or policy makers. For example, if my research problem is
college students who struggle with anxiety and stress and I find that my
cognitive-behavioral
intervention (CBT) helps this population, then what does
this mean for the social work field? Maybe future social work researchers could
use CBT with other groups of college students or maybe social workers could
have a social worker on campuses that can implement a CBT intervention with
college students.
