Getting Started with this Project
Photovoice is a qualitative research method used by many researchers, including myself! Photovoice methodology involves participants using digital photographs to respond to research questions or prompts. I have adapted this research method for classroom use so that you can experiment with anthropological themes using authentic research strategies (collecting data, contextualization and analysis).
Throughout the semester, we will work on an “Observations through Photovoice” project, a participatory project that invites you to photograph your surroundings and analyze those using anthropological themes and perspectives. The goal of this project is for you to apply theories and ideas we learn in class and is also an opportunity for you to experiment with a contemporary research method used by some anthropologists.
There are four stages to the “Observations through Photovoice” project that require your participation and four deadlines. Each stage involves coding (classifying) your own photographs. The fourth stage asks you to analyze your photos, share them with the class, and reflect on themes generated through this project. Select photos will be part of a culminating exhibition at the end of the semester.
