Assignment Details
The critique (of the peer-reviewed article chosen) should include the following information:
1) A concise summary of the news article (approximately 1 paragraph).
2) A clear statement of your position on the article. Do you agree or disagree with the way in which the
story ‘spun’ the topic? This should be based not only on your personal beliefs but should be an informed
opinion, based on the scientific evidence and legislation/policies related to the topic.
3) Support for why you agree or disagree with the information presented in the article. This should form
the bulk of your critique. In this section you should clearly identify the criteria you used to evaluate the
article and its accuracy (e.g., author’s credentials, credentials of experts or sources cited, logic of
arguments, interpretation of data presented, etc.). You can highlight what the story presented
accurately, what was misrepresented, and whether there are additional perspectives on the topic that
should have been taken into consideration but were not presented in the article. Your argument should
be supported with specific information from reliable sources (e.g., peer-reviewed journals, books,
legislation/policies, reports).
4) A conclusion re-stating your position on the article and summarizing your rationale for taking that
position.
Format of Paper
A) Your assignment must be submitted to Blackboard as a Word document. The paper
should not exceed 4 pages double-spaced (excluding title page and reference page(s)).
B) Includes a title page formatted according to current APA guidelines.
C) Includes a copy (PDF) of your chosen news story (please note that links to news stories cannot be
accepted). The story should be from an established newspaper or magazine with a publisher (print or
online).
D) Includes a list of references used to prepare your paper. You should refer to at least 2 academic sources
(peer reviewed journal articles, books) and/or 2 organizational/government documents (policies,
reports). Format your reference list according to current APA standards
