The Value of Literature

3. ‘Modern satire takes up residence on a planet of the apes. Humans have turned
everywhere into monkeys—a degree zero of the human animal, devoid of spiritual life and
intellectual worth, a parody of civility and culture, repellent, charmless, disgusting.’ (Valerie
Cunningham)

Discuss Kafka’s ‘A Report to an Academy’ as a satire of civility and culture. What does
Kafka’s satire reveal about the ideals of culture and civilization?

– Your essay must include at least ONE reference (preferably more) to a relevant
supplementary reading OR a relevant secondary or critical text. This includes books and
peer-reviewed articles but not unreferenced internet sources and study guides.
The following are the literary satires set for Module 1: Langston Hughes, ‘Slave on the
Block’; Dorothy Parker, ‘Arrangement in Black and White’; Franz Kafka, ‘A Report to an
Academy’; Angela Carter, ‘The Bloody Chamber’. Summer Heights High is NOT a set text
for the module (we only looked at short clips from it and it is not a literary text).
