the Yellow Peril with The Civilization of Blaine

When talking about the Yellow Peril, Mel Chen describes how the Chinese
were triangulated between Black and White in some political advertisements.
Analyze the image, figure 8, which is by Thomas Nast, and titled “The Civilization of Blaine,”
Harper’s Weekly, 1879” (Chen 112) in order to
explain how racial triangulation is established through a dominant
gaze/captions. What are elements of Yellow Perilism in this image that seems to
shift to representing the Chinese as a Model Minority? How is “racial
triangulation,” pitting Asians against Blacks, through the Yellow Peril still
evident today? Find a contemporary example in the media today (an image or
statement or event) and compare it with Nast’s drawing. How do Asians benefit from
anti-Blackness by serving as a “buffer” both then and now?
