Theoretical Analysis of a Social Problem or Social Phenomenon
Before you begin to write:
Choose a sociological topic. This may be a social problem e.g. (COVID-19 or
poverty) or a social phenomenon e.g. (social media). See Professor Naylor if you
are unsure of your topic selection.
Paper Requirements:
1) Introduce the topic. Discuss the problem or phenomenon. Define and
describe the topic. (Worth up to 5 pts.)
2) What would a structural functionalist say about this topic? Be sure to use the
concepts of the theory to support your argument. Use your theory handout.
The reader should get a complete understanding of the theory from your
discussion. (Worth up to 15 pts.)
3) What would a social conflict theorist say about this topic? Be sure to use the
concepts of the theory to support your argument. Use your theory handout.
The reader should get a complete understanding of the theory from your
discussion. (Worth up to 15 pts.)
4) In the present time and place, which of the two theories best explains the
problem or phenomenon? Why? (Worth up to 5 pts.)
5) Include title page using APA format.
6) Writing Quality is based on sound spelling and grammar. (Worth up to 10
pts.)
This paper must use Times New Roman, 12”font, 1”margins, typed double-
spaced. This paper must be written in 3rd person. Do not use the words: I, me,
my, you, or your. Do not use contractions. You must paraphrase. Paper must
be a minimum of two full pages (not including title page) and no more than
four pages.
