· Therapists should begin by discussing the limits of confidentiality and the therapist’s
trainee status with the client and her mother.

Therapist
should ask if the client has ever received therapy in the past period if so,
the therapist should ask when and what problem was addressed in her previous
therapy session. The therapist should also ask if this previous therapy
experience was positive, negative, or helpful.

Therapist
should clarify with the client her expectations of meeting with therapist. What
do you think about being here today? The therapist should enlist the parent(s)
at this point. What are the parent expectations of therapy? What family
involvement would the client like to see in therapy?

Is
the client sexually active? Is she using protection? Is the client having any
issues regarding her sexual orientation? Is she engaging in any high-risk
sexual behavior?

· Therapists should assess for suicide, homicide, and self-injurious behaviors. Has client or family experienced neighborhood violence? Any current financial stress? Has the client experienced any traumatic events, such as abuse, sexual abuse, neglect,
hospitalizations, or car accident?
