Think of this essay as both a culmination of our lessons throughout this semester and also an extended version of our previous critical projects. The goal of this essay is similar to our first two essays: choose a text from the short story authors OR poets OR dramatists we’ve read this semester (I’ll send you the story that I chose) , and write a research paper in which you explore the thematic content of the work by analyzing several of the work’s figurative or literary

Because this essay is longer than our previous essays, you have the opportunity to really unpack and analyze multiple aspects of the text (elements of its plot, the narrator or speaker, multiple characters, etc.) in order to come to some conclusion about the text’s purpose. You will also be required, as in our previous essays, to support your claims with evidence from at least four secondary sources. Remember your claim should be your last sentence in your first paragraph.

Along with utilizing quotes from these secondary sources, you will also be required to accompany your essay with an Annotated Bibliography. Seeing as you’ve all passed Comp I, you should already be familiar with the expectations of an Annotated Bibliography. I will be reviewing this as the weeks go on.

This essay is an opportunity for you to really explore one work we’ve read this semester in an extensive way. You cannot choose to write about a text that you’ve written on for a previous paper. So, choose a poem, story, or work of drama that interested you, reread it, annotate it, and decide what parts of the story you want to analyze, and how those parts contribute to a larger theme.
