Read Emerson’s essay History. I have provided you with an audio link to History (Links to an external site.) as well. So you can read and listen at the same time. This is going to be a difficult read, and you may have to read it more than once. Read it is 15-minute chunks, step away and come back and read for 15 minutes more. This way you can think about what is being said. Here’s the deal, Emerson is incredibly profound. If you listen closely, you will understand what I mean. I am not going to tell you what he means because that would go against everything that defined transcendentalism, it is a very personal journey, so in that spirit, I want to know what you think he means in relation to your life experiences.
Part 01:
Please review the essay requirements below. Students are required to use a minimum of 3 sources from Emerson’s Essay History, students should use 2 sources from the unit material. Students are also able to use two outside sources if you like, but these are not required. If you do use outside sources they should be websites that end with .edu.
Student papers will be turned in to Turnitin to evaluate the originality of their papers.
Student’s will be able to view their Originality Report upon submission.
Formatting
Introduction, Body, Conclusion required
Good transitions between topics within the body of the essay
Chicago style formatting is required- using footnotes.
Examples and direct quotes are required to demonstrate an understanding of the material.
Minimum use of 3 sources from Emerson’s essay History and 2 sources from the Unit Material.

Essay Should Cover
Once you have listened to or read the essay I want you to write a three-page paper, you may write more if you like.
If you just read along with the audio, you will begin to be moved by Emerson’s dialogue. You will not understand everything he is conveying nor should you. Emerson’s essay is one that should be read over the course of one’s life numerous times; each reading reveals more than the last since you as an individual have experienced more and brought more depth of understanding.
What I don’t want is a Cliff-note or Spark-note interpretation, I am not looking for the thoughts of someone else here, nor do I want the learned thoughts of a Ph.D. intellect, I want to know how the essay moves YOU, what it reveals to YOU, there are no wrong answers here. An honest effort will result in full credit, so let yourself go and see what strikes you, there will be that moment when you are taken aback as the essay reveals something very personal.
You will conclude your paper with two quotes from the essay that you believe convey something to you personally, and explain what you think these quotes mean and how each one relates to your life. Again don’t go searching the internet for answers, I want your interpretations.
What I am looking for in this paper is an honest reflection on what Emerson is saying to YOU. I want to know, from what you write, that you have read the essay and are responding to what you can. I suspect that every paper will be different.
You will support your inferences with the examples from the reading as instructed.
