Three Terms and a Scene HUMN 2350 Weseloh
Assignment: Write at least 400 words analyzing the scene from Saving Private Ryan in which troops are
in a damaged church (it begins when the captain holds hand near candle). Be sure to watch this part of
the film several times and take notes when you decide which terms to use.
Your analysis must use three of the following four terms to determine how the director used standard
Hollywood film techniques to great advantage in this approximately eight-minute sequence of scenes.
The chosen terms (listed in the glossary near the back of your textbook) are:
 Diegetic Sound
 180-degree rule
 Lighting
o Low-key
o High-key
o Three-point
 Camera
o Angle
o Distance
o Movement
If you choose lighting as a term, you must focus on only one of the three subtopics. For example, lowkey lighting. If you choose camera, you must focus on only one of the three subtopics. For example,
camera angle.
o Assignment must be in essay form
o Each term you use must be bolded when it is written the first time
o Assignment must be proofread and edited carefully
o Include a works cited page for the movie version you watched, and sources you used for the
paper (not required to use outside sources)
