“To what extent can working memory training be considered effective? Argue for your
position, with reference to scientific evidence.”
Background: Working memory is an important cognitive function that underpins a wide variety of cognitive
skills and plays an important role in measures of general intelligence. The prospect that working memory could
be improved through training is therefore very attractive to individuals, potentially providing us with an
advantage in academic and professional lives. Improving this ability would also provide important clinical uses
in improving quality of life in people with cognitive impairments.
But can we train this ability? This is currently a controversial question in cognitive psychology and cognitive
