To what extent does a person’s native language determine how they think?

Choose one of the following titles and write a discursive essay:

1. To what extent does a person’s native language determine how they think?
2. How credible is the idea that all languages have some shared and universal features?
3. Explain the concept of linguistic relativity and assess how plausible it is.

You must ONLY use the GIVEN sources which are in the files (in the form of quotations, paraphrasing, references, etc.) where it will enhance and support your arguments, for or against. Use them when appropriate or necessary. Remember, however, that this is primarily a test of YOUR writing ability.

When referring to the source texts you should simply use the author’s surname in brackets, for example: ‘…language is only one factor that influences cognition and behaviour’ (Pinker).

Remember to do the following: read the question carefully, ‘brainstorm’ the topic and think of some good ideas, make a plan with a clear structure, write a draft and then revise it. Finally, check your text very carefully for mistakes (proofreading).

Length: your essay should be between 700 and 800 words. There is NO limitation on the number of paragraphs.
Deadline for submission of the essay: Friday 27 January 2023.
