Topic: Endangered Languages / Reflection Paper
This paper is a reflection paper. You are supposed to reflect about the topic / prompt to form an opinion that is based on fact and education. Since it is still your opinion, your take on the topic, a reflection papers uses “I” statements (first person narrative). Write from your own perspective: I think, I wonder, my reaction was…
In your paper, share your reflection.
Examples of what you might think about:
What happens when a language becomes endangered?
How and why did the language get to that point?
Does it matter if a language dies?
What will die with it?
How would you feel if the endangered language were yours and your grandma was the last one to know it?
Some communities whose heritage language is no longer spoken prefer to call it a “remembered” language rather than a ‘dead’ or ‘lost’ language. Why do you think that is?
Feel free to bring in examples from your family history. If your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. were immigrants from countries where English was not the main language, think about what was lost / not passed down?
