The three protest movements studied in this section are quite distinct with respect to histories, strategies, and goals; (the Domestic workers in the US,Women farmworkers in the US, and women in the Niger Delta.) That said, women were central to the advancement of and creativity in all three movements. Discuss the roles of women in each movement. (You can focus on any sub-movement in the Niger Delta, you do not need to discuss them all.)
DO NOT START WRITING THIS WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE GRADING RUBRIC FIRST! I WOULD ALSO LOOK AT MY FEEDBACK ON YOUR FIRST TRANSLATING MOVEMENT PAPER TO MAKE SURE YOU LEARN FROM THOSE MISTAKES, WHERE RELEVANT.
Rublic:
Understand the movement:
Does your paper make it clear to me that you understand the DWU, the UFW, and the activism in the Niger Delta?
Example:
Do you provide at least one CONCRETE example of how women participated in each movement?
Writing format and assignment guidelines:
Is your paper well written? Typed? Well organized? Proofread? Properly formatted? Includes page numbers? In text citations? Meets the length requirements – 600 words, double spaced pages, one inch margins? Word count is included? Specific audience is noted up front?
IMPORTANT:
Edit, after looking the first batch: I will stop reading after I get to what appears to be around 600 words, thus your grade will be based on the first 600 words of your answer even if you include 1,000.
*NO OUTSIDE READINGS.
* NO GOOGLE SOURCES TO ANSWER THE QUESTION
Guidance for choosing your audience:
1) Other academics: This will be the standard academic paper, written for someone educated but does not know the specifics of the topic you will discuss. You might choose this if a) you don’t feel like thinking about a new audience, b) you feel like you need to work on your college level writing so you need to keep practicing, or c) you are considering a career in academia so you will be speaking this language for a long time and need to perfect it.
Note: In my experiences, writing for non-academics can be harder so don’t choose these options because they sound easier.
2) High school students: Your are considering some sort of career in K-12 education. This would be good practice for hopefully being able to teach this sort of material to High Schoolers or below some day. (Or your own kids or relatives.)
3) Alternative/popular press: This means places like Ms. Magazine or Bitch Media. You might choose this if a) you are considering a career as a writer. Even non-academic writing requires evidence so these papers would be good practice; b) you are interested in starting a blog or already have one; 3) are interested in starting a podcast or already have one.
4) Friends/family that you care about, who are hostile to GWSS: Many of us have had conversations with people who have dismissed the content of GWSS classes. For those of us who teach it or major in it those conversations can be anywhere from maddening to painful. If you are one of those people who struggles to explain what you are learning and why it matters, this might be your option.
In all cases, regardless of your audience, your paper needs to:
Note: All of this will be turned into your grading rubrics so read these guidelines carefully and check the rubric before you start each paper.
Tell me which audience you have chosen. This should be at the top of your paper and does not go toward your word count.
Answer the question clearly and directly.
Demonstrate you did and understood the readings, particularly the connections across them. This is done by clearly incorporating evidence from the reading into your answer. If you are doing option 4 you can include the evidence in a chatty way. For example, “I read this article that said…” And then explain what you read in such a way that makes it clear to me you did the reading.
Be well written: This means grammatically correct and clearly organized. In a good paper, among other things, arguments should flow logically and legibly from one to the next. Again, option 4 can be chatty, almost like you are talking, but it still needs to be grammatically correct and well organized.
Adhere to course format guidelines, including the word count, double-spacing, one-inch margins, and include the word count in the paper.
