Understanding Causes of Wealth and Income Inequality in India

Write an argumentative essay (at least 2,000 words) that synthesizes and assesses the central arguments of Parthasarathi (2011), Piketty (2022), and Piketty (2020: 304-361) regarding causes of income and wealth inequality within India, and between India and the global North today.

Synthesis should identify the core argument(s) in each of these readings, focusing on the most significant aspects of each reading’s main claims about various historical causes of contemporary income and wealth inequality within India and between India and the global North. Synthesis should note specific causes that each reading identifies as the most important in shaping patterns of inequality within India and between India and countries of the global North such as Britain. Synthesize the findings of:
• the country sheet for India in World Inequality Report (WIR 2022: 197) regarding contemporary levels of – and changes over time in – Indian wealth and income inequality.
• The introduction, conclusion, and Chapter 3 of Parthasarathi (2011) “Political Institutions and Economic Life”
• Chapter 8 of Piketty (2020) “Ternary Societies and Colonialism: The Case of India”
• discussions of India in Piketty (2022), especially Chapter 3

Essay should also contain an assessment in which you craft and defend a central claim that clearly specifies and elaborates upon at least two or three reasons that one author’s arguments (those of Piketty or Parthasarathi) are more convincing than the other’s regarding the question of how and why wealth and income inequality levels within contemporary India – and between India and countries of the global North – reached the levels they had by 2022. Analyze the contributions and any limitations of the core arguments that each author makes regarding causes of wealth and income inequalities within India and between India and the rest of the world. It may also be helpful to specify what each author argues has NOT caused Indian inequality to look as it does today, and which of these causes Parthasarthi and Piketty might agree and disagree about.
