In Unit 1, you have covered 3 modules of information on the theory of evolution and you discussed some of the historical progression of evolutionary thought. In this Application module you are given several videos that describe evolutionary processes and thought. In most science classes you are introduced to the Scientific Method (in BISC 102) and given information on the process that is necessary for a scientific theory to develop. The Theory of Evolution is no different in the processes that have been applied to make this a well-accepted, sound scientific theory. In this essay assignment, please discuss why the Theory of Evolution is “not just a theory” as many people contend. To address this idea, you should discuss what a scientific theory is, what evidence supports this theory and the strength of the evidence. You should use information from the textbook as well as the resources provided in the Unit 1 introductory folder to support statements that you make. You may also use outside, scientific sources. Sources that are not based on scientific work should not be used to support your discussion here in this science class.
Topics that need to be considered include (but are not limited to):
scientific method as a process of thought and investigation
historical progression of evolutionary thought (Darwin, Wallace, etc)
microevolution and the 5 processes that drive it
discussion of natural selection and how evidence of this is present today
evidence of evolution and strength of that evidence
macroevolutionary processes and evidence of those
In your final paragraph, discuss a misconception that you had about the Theory of Evolution and what information has helped you overcome that misconception.
This essay should be a least 700-1000 words in length and be written from a scientific perspective.
References in APA format should be included at the end of the submission.
