Pick a country with which America is clearly in a rivalrous or even adversarial relationship.
Introduction: Explain why it is important to understand that relationship, its implications for America’s
other relationships and for our understanding of US foreign policy in general.
Thesis: What is at stake for either of the two countries? What type of national interest does it
represent? How might this conflict be terminated? A win-win, win-lose, or lose-lose outcome?
Empirical Support: Examine each of the aspects of US foreign policymaking, including, institutions,
domestic influences and their vision of US national interest, and external international implications of
the relationship in order to support your thesis. Explain why do you believe that evidence supports or
disproves your thesis.
Conclusion: Are there other US relationships of similar nature to which this case is applicable? What
implications do your findings have for those relationships
