University Writing Portfolio

What To Do.
As part of campus writing assessments, you will submit one REVISED major writing project, Project Two, Project Three, or Project Four, the ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES of the project, and a formal business self-analytical COVER LETTER that explores your writing and researching process for the project and explores areas of revision in the project. Your portfolio will be aimed to the portfolio reviewers at the University Writing Center.

How To Do It.
The purpose of the portfolio is to demonstrate what you have learned in class about writing and researching practices in the field of business and industry. One way to demonstrate writing and researching practices is to show what you have learned in this course through the kinds of revisions you make in your chosen project. The business self-analytical cover letter should explore your writing and researching process when drafting and researching the revised chosen project in addition to exploring specific revisions that are made in the revised project. Because you are aiming the portfolio to University Writing Center portfolio reviewers, you should strive to professionally present your work so that the portfolio reviewers gain insight into your writing and researching practices.

Revised Project.
When revising your chosen project (Project Two, Project Three, or Project Four), I recommend keeping in mind the rhetorical situation of the project: purpose, audience, and context. In analyzing the rhetorical situation, you may discover many areas of revision in the project: introduction, conclusion, purpose (thesis statement), organization, content, format/design, sources, writing style and language, etc. In addition to keeping in mind purpose, audience, and context, you should also keep in mind feedback when revising a piece: my feedback, peer’s feedback, UWC feedback, and, most especially, your own feedback. Maybe YOU see an aspect in your project that YOU think could be more persuasive to your target audience. Finally, I recommend using the original assignment guidelines as well as our rubric to help you revise one of your major projects.

Business Self-Analytical Cover Letter.
The business self-analytical cover letter should comprehensively explore your writing, researching, and areas of revision of your chosen project. The cover letter should explore the WHAT, WHERE, WHY, WHEN, and HOW of drafting and researching the chosen project and concretely explore areas of revisions in the chosen project, referencing specific areas of the project that have been revised. Keep in mind that the portfolio reviewers do not know you nor do they have access to any of your coursework in the course. As such, you may need to provide additional clarification when exploring certain aspects of the project.
Format.
Your cover letter should follow business letter conventions (single spaced) and be approximately 1 to 2 pages in length but no more than 2 pages in length. Cover letters, whether for a potential career position or for a writing course, often adhere to business letter conventions, for example, the inclusion of the sender’s or recipient’s addresses, a salutation, a closing, etc. Since you are aiming your piece to portfolio reviewers at the University Writing Center, you should use the University Writing Center’s address, and your salutation should be addressed to the portfolio reviewers of the University Writing Center.
Note: Do not aim the cover letter to me. While I will assess the portfolio for the course, the portfolio will continue to have a life of its own outside of the course.

Submission.
You will submit your portfolio to the “University Writing Portfolio” assignment. You will submit your chosen project, cover letter, and the assignment guidelines of the project – can download the assignment guidelines or copy/paste the assignment guidelines in a Word document. You will have three attempts to submit your portfolio. Your documents should be in .docx or .pdf format.
The University Writing Portfolio assignment is connected to an external tool called “Portfolium.” Portfolium is an online platform that will allow you to create your portfolio. Because Portfolium is an external tool outside of Canvas, I highly suggest reading the “Portfolium” materials in the “Portfolio” module. You will need to register with Portfolium to submit your University Writing Portfolio.
