1. Using James Svara’s Ethical Triangle explain how you would handle the following scenario:
John is a retired factory worker living in an apartment building. He applied for social security, but has not received and checks. When he inquires as to why, the Social Security Administration informs him that their records indicate that he has died. He tries to correct the obvious error, but the paperwork and miscommunication continue the delay. Fortunately, Sarah is a neighbor in the building and works for the Social Security Administration. John asks Sarah to intervene and help with his situation. Sarah does so willingly and soon John begins to receive his checks.
However, Sarah’s supervisor informs her that she is to be suspended until an investigation is complete on her using her position to benefit a friend. The influence peddling is a violation of the rule that an employee can not assist any private citizen who attempts to communicate with the Social Security Administration. Her assisting John at his personal request violates this rule.
