Analysis of Fictional Character

Good works of fiction are not the happenstance of an accidental union between an entertaining plot and great characters but rather the deliberate result of an author’s toils using characterization and other rhetorical strategies, as well as the rhetorical analysis framework, to create a story that both teaches and tells. In this project, you will choose a character from a work of fiction that you wish to write about. Using passages from your chosen text, you will analyze/consider the important aspects of each character as a person including personality, physical description, social status, moral standing, etc., i.e. the character traits of your character. Using your analysis, you will craft a clear and concise thesis which argues that as crafted by the author, the character traits of your chosen character are not just simply “characterization” but also rhetorical devices to convey meaning and connect to the text’s audience, i.e. they have a “function”. Again, we will practice this in class by reading mentor texts, group work and freewriting.
