Thomas More’s
Utopia presents a complicated and at times contradictory understanding
of human nature, governance, and ethics.
Hythloday suggests that human beings inherently tend toward the good,
toward generosity and compassion. Yet
the Utopian system seems to take especially great care to make sure that people
behave well, suggesting that, if left to themselves, they might not. How have the Utopians socially engineered
