Assessment Task:
This the first stage of a two stage process which involves working a Policy Brief for a specific Minister or head of an Australian government. The first stage involves you trying to persuade that Minister or Head of Department that there is a significant social problem which their government should be addressing, or addressing better. Having identified that problem your task is to answer the question: what is actually happening? You need to describe that problem, and describe some of the harms that are associated with the problem. For example, is the problem leading to economic distress, ill health, or suffering. You need to do some basic research so as to provide evidence to demonstrate that there is a problem, and show that there are harms. We also want you to critically assess the credibility of the evidence and the argument you are making. This goes to issues about the assumptions you are making as well as the credibility of any evidence you are presenting. (For example: how was the evidence got? Is it actually relevant? Does the evidence rely on dodgy assumptions?) All of this is about persuading the government there is a problem and that there are good grounds for believing this is significant problem.
Using the exemplar which we will provide, you will draft a well-designed and coherent, evidence-based series of paragraphs using clear, fluent, active-voiced prose that has been edited to a professional standard.
