The event
The event of violence
described in the workplace was in an emergency department of a small but busy
country hospital in New South Wales. There is a small mental health room off to
the side of the emergency ward, which is hard to monitor, and the nurse is
allocated to multiple patients. This room only has one door and is close the
Ambulance exit. There are only mental health services available via a zoom/
skype meeting which can often take some hours to be organised.
On arrival by Ambulance
the client was triaged and taken to the mental health room, he was agitated and
pacing, I introduced myself and any items were removed that he may be able to
cause harm to himself or others. The medical officer was notified and due to
the client’s agitation security was advised and asked to be on standby.
Security is not usually in the emergency department unless there is an issue or
on night shifts.
Shortly after his arrival
as I was discussing the process of what he could expect his threatening
behaviour escalated quickly for verbal abuse to physical abuse, and he pushed
me as he was trying to exit the room. Luckily, I was close to the door, and I
activated my duress alarm, as required to be worn in the emergency department security
was close by, they were able to intervene quickly. This all happened so quickly
and looking back I had tried to verbally de-escalate and the distraction techniques, but it all
happened so quickly. Luckily, I was uninjured physically in this incident.
