Pick a type of violence in America and discuss how what you have learned in this course applies to both the perpetuation of the violence in this country and its possible dissolution. Potential topics you may consider are racism, sexism, immigration issues, recruitment of Americans into al-Qaeda, family violence, school shootings, family structure or choice, or some other topic of your own choosing. Be sure in your paper that you write from the point of view of a bystander, someone outside the conflict who can evaluate both sides.
Answer the following points in your paper:
Identify the “us” and “them.” How are the sides similar or different? How does one gain membership into one of the groups?
What are the elements of violence? How does it manifest? How does it perpetuate itself? Why do you think people are drawn to this type of violence?
How does the violence affect the people involved? How does it affect outsiders?
How has this type of violence changed over the last 10, 20, or 30 years?
What changes do you see in popular media–TV, film, social media–that may affect how this type of violence is perceived by American citizens?
What are the current strategies in place to solve this problem? What additional strategies do you think are needed in the future?
Your completed final paper should be 5-7 pages. All submissions should be formatted in a 12 point Times New Roman font. Your answer should contain paraphrased information from at least one valid source other than your textbook, and all citations and references should be properly cited in APA format (7th edition).
