VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS

After reading Chapter 4, choose one of the following public service announcement themes for parts A and B of the assignment: drugs, smoking/vaping, animal rights, gender rights, racial equality, sexual equality, wildfire/earthquake/flood/tornado preparedness, pollution, recycling, driving laws (fastening your seatbelt, texting while driving, drunk driving).
Part A: Persuasion
Create an image (e.g., draw, paint, take photographs, mark up a stock image, use Photoshop, etc.) and a tagline that persuades the viewer to behave in a directed manner regarding the theme you chose. Use emotional appeal in the image you create and factual information in the tagline/information you write.
Part B: Propaganda
Create an image (e.g., draw, paint, take photographs, mark up a stock image, use Photoshop, etc.) and a tagline that directs the viewer to behave in a directed manner regarding the theme you chose (same theme as Part A). Use emotional appeal in the image you create, and nonfactual or opinionated information in the tagline/information you write.

After creating your images and taglines, answer, discuss, and debate with your classmates:
What is the difference between persuasion and propaganda?
What are the pros and cons of both persuasion and propaganda?
Is it ethical for companies, institutions, and nonprofits to use persuasion and propaganda? Why or why not?
Next, include the images and taglines you created:
Describe how the first image is an example of persuasion. Try to formulate an idea of what the image is telling the audience (what is it trying to make them do, feel, or believe?).
Describe how the second image is an example of persuasion. Try to formulate an idea of what the image is telling the audience (what is it trying to make them do, feel, or believe?).
at least two in-text citations from Chapter 4
