1. Review your selected topic with the instructor. Be specific regarding the age/population group and issue or nutrient of concern. This will make your research easier! 2. Use Pubmed or Google Scholar to research your topic. Try to find 5 – 6 research based articles on your topic (Use articles from 2010 – the present). READ THE ARTICLES! Highlight important ideas – take notes of the main points! 3. Use supplemental sites (that end in .gov, .edu or .org) to supplement your research. 4. Write a 6 page paper (not more than 10 ages) discussing your topic and the recommendations or guidelines provided in current literature (research articles). Structure the paper as follows: – Introduction – introduce your topic – which population group are you discussing? What is the health issue or nutrient of concern? A summary statement on what you found in reading the articles – Paragraph 1 – Describe the background of the issue (why is it a concern? Why is this particular population group affected?) – Paragraph 2 – Present ONE recommendation from the readings – support it by citing and referencing the articles – Paragraphs 3 – 5 (or as many as you need!) – Present other recommendations or points from the readings. Use a new paragraph for a new recommendation/idea being discussed. Support your statements by citing and referencing the specific articles that discuss each idea. – Conclusion/Summary – Summarize the general recommendation from your research and any further studies/investigations that may be needed. Is there public policy in place to help provide resources to your population/age group for the issues you discussed? If not, what types of resources (on a public level) may help? 5. Rephrase and write ideas in your OWN WORDS! Do not copy directly from any articles! 6. Remember to cite all references in the correct style (MLA or APA). 7. Do not use blog posts or magazine articles as references. If you are unsure if a reference is credible, review it with your instructor. 8. Provide a full list of your references at the end of your paper in the correct style (MLA or APA). 9. Proof-read your paper for spelling & grammatical errors before submitting it.
