Voice and Culture

The origin of poetry is oral. Poems were chanted or sung long before they were written down. The spoken word poetry movement circles back to poetry’s ancient roots. Modern spoken word includes both rhymed and unrhymed poetry, with influences as diverse as hip-hop, Beat poets, and punk. Indeed, spoken word is a global, multi-lingual phenomenon. Despite this diversity, though, two emphases persist in nearly all spoken word poetry: performance and the expression of personal experience.
