Voter suppression (laws, policies, and behaviors that make it harder for Black people to vote in elections)

Your essay must be 4-6 pages (not including title page and reference list) and adhere to APA formatting guidelines (Times New Roman, 12-point font, 1 inch margins, title page, reference list, and in-text citations). You must include 3 terms from the text and and at two additional outside sources. Cite your sources appropriately using citations. When you cite your term, please bold it, define it, and then apply it. For example, “culture is defined as ….(Fraleigh, Tuman, & Adams, 2017, p. 89). In America, culture is unique because…”
Title Page: Must be formatted according to APA guidelines.
Introduction: Give me an introduction to your paper that makes sense. You can talk about systemic racism, hidden acts of discrimination, white privilege, or implicit bias. You can even tell a personal story about a time you witnessed or experienced racism. You can share a story from someone else (a friend, relative, parent, or neighbor) about a time they experienced something you want to share. You can even talk about a TV show or social media interaction that shocked or angered you. Introduction should be at least 2 paragraphs.
Transition into your topic: You should bridge from your introduction into your topic. Reveal your topic. Is it red lining? Voter suppression? You need to tell us a little background information. What IS red lining? What IS voter suppression? Be sure to tell us how your topic qualifies as a form of racism and why it is harmful/hurtful/destructive/oppressive/etc. This would be a great place to cite one of your external sources. This section should be at least 3-4 paragraphs.
Analysis of Oppression: How does communication contribute to this problem? Do a little research on your topic. How did this topic begin? For example, if you are talking about voter suppression, give us a very brief history lesson and tell us how communication formed policies and then changed perceptions of voting. Do you know that people STILL deny voter suppression happens, even though it has been proven? Why? What acts of communication create this misunderstanding? This would be a great place to cite an external source AND your textbook. This section should be at least 5 paragraphs.
Recommendations: How can “we” change our communication to stop these racist acts, beliefs, and/or behaviors? Who should change? What should they do instead? Why will this help? This might be a good place to cite the text and/or an external source. This section should be at least 3 paragraphs.
Reference List: Your reference list should have at least 3 sources (your text and the two additional sources you find).
To get full credit, your essay must:
1. Include a title page, at least 3 citations from the book, 2 external citations, and a reference list. Everything should be formatted to APA guidelines.
2. Write your essay from a place of learning and inquiry. What I mean by this–it is not helpful to say “I don’t believe racism is a problem.” We know it is a problem; the question is, what part of the problem would you like to discuss? I am not asking you to adhere to certain political beliefs, I am asking you to interrogate how communication systems create systems of oppression towards marginalized groups.
3. Essay must be 4-6 pages, not counting the title page or reference list. With these two documents, the final essay will be 6-8. Save as a PDF and upload to Canvas.
