Voting disenfranchisement for minorities

Your assignment is to write an Opinion Editorial (“Op-ed”) for submission to a newspaper.
You should take a look at Op-ed examples from papers like the New York Times, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, and the Wall Street Journal.

Your editorial should be about an issue about voting, local, state or national and your piece should make clear what your topic is and how it relates to the Constitution and to the government of U.S. citizens. You may choose any topic relevant to elections and voting (districting, GOP legislation, voter suppression, local elections, state elections, federal elections, national legislation being voted on by Congress, etc.) that you are interested in. It is usually easier to write an Oped when it is about a subject about which you are passionate.

To write this Op-Ed successfully, you must make a point and then explain the issue that you are talking about such that your reader understands the issue, the stakes involved, and the two or three main positions on the issue. You must make your position clear, defend it, provide support and address counter arguments.

You must use research in your op-ed. Some of your cites may be from the web however three of your sources must be from an academic journal or book that is in print at the library. Your piece should make an argument. This means that it must have a thesis that is made clear at the beginning of your piece that explains your position on an issue of law and government. You must address counter arguments in your piece.

You will be graded on your ability: to choose an issue that is relevant to the class material; to include reference to class material, concepts or ideas that we have discussed; to address counter arguments; to provide an example in your piece; to organize your paper effectively (introduction, body and conclusion); on your writing and its appearance, and on the quality of your research.

Remember, the point of this assignment is to learn about your topic and to write and opinion piece making a well-supported argument.
