W3: Implementation Issues & Frameworks

Answer using one source
1. Why is it important for employees to stay motivated in the workplace? Provide at least two ways in which motivation is achieved in your current job?
2. Security policies such as an email policy or acceptable use policy are written by the CIO or member or the IT department. If you were in charge of writing security policies how would you convince upper management, who usually knows very little about technology, to implement the new policies?

Respond to Art,
Worker apathy is one of the issues an organization can face which can lead to security vulnerabilities (Robert Johnson, 2022). Remaining motivated in the workplace can reduce potential incidents from becoming bigger issues that need a response. I’m currently a full-time student, but in the past, I’ve experienced workplace motivation where there is honest support from my immediate leadership. Meaning, I found them easily approachable and willing to listen to me and trust I knew what I was talking about regarding any concern. I in turn trusted they would take my issue seriously and address it. The other way I’ve experienced motivation is by having good work be promptly rewarded, in any variety of ways. Sure, employee reviews mean things, but a free lunch or gas card goes a long way to say, “thanks for the good work”.

To convince upper management to implement new policies, I’d simply give them statistics on our organization and others like it (competition?) in the industry regarding costs associated with not having the policy. Organizations seem to be highly motivated by money, budgets, costs, etc. So, by giving some data that can show them costs of the organization now vs. estimated costs following the adoption of the new policy, you potentially have a greater chance of adopting said policy. Obviously, you’ll have to explain some things to non-IT savvy management, but that is hardly irregular. I simply think you’re likely to get farther by explaining how the new policy affects the bottom line rather than the “why” of the BYOD or removable media portions of the policy.

Motivation of employees is important because it inspires them to be productive and active in their roles. The idea of a motivated environment is ideal when an employee can do what they love. Productivity is an imperative tool in the technology industry, and it needs to be that way because an unproductive environment leads to laziness, calling out, and possible shortages in a workforce. If a security operations analyst falls asleep at work because he/she is bored. It can lead to possible attacks, and it will ruin the lives of many people. For work, we go out to do a certain activity to have a discussion. It could be a hike, eating out, or even just doing a random event. I would consider physical training as a motivator, but we have some fun events like running or even having a cookout on random occasions. As CIO, I would likely show the problems to the upper management because it allows them to physically see how someone could ruin a standard operating procedure by violating policy. In most cases, I would likely present statistics in relation to incidents and causes as a potential problem from general audits with monthly monitoring. Moderators should be able to dictate certain aspects of employees. Management should enforce these policies, but most upper management has little information technology experience especially in a security field. Security and information assurance should be a priority for a company because a comprehensive understanding of technology can help provide this. Management should take some form of training and send it down to their subordinates.
