something that highlights how, in media coverage, climate change is an
oft-discussed topic. We see images of flooding, fires, hurricanes, and these
are often accompanied by the voices of scientists who tell us about the rate at
which oceans are rising etc. This kind of coverage drives home the dramatic
effect climate change can have on our lives (even in the West), but scientific
statistics tend to remain distant and little comprehensible to the average
Canadian. What we don’t often hear about, however, is the everyday effects of
climate change on already marginalized people in the developing world and the
West. We hear little from people whose livelihoods and subsistence are
irreversibly impacted by climate change. The Anthropologists endeavours to alter
this, by documenting an anthropologist’s attempts to record those people’s
experiences. In doing so, you argue, the documentary illustrates the invaluable
contributions anthropology can make to understanding the very real impacts
climate change has on marginalized people’s lives and supplement quantitative
scientific data with qualitative insights. While you applaud the
anthropologist’s attempts to narrate these people’s stories, however, you also
argue that such efforts would be more successful and valuable if the
authoritative, interpretative voice of the white, western anthropologist would
be decentralized and people themselves would have been given the opportunity to
document their experiences. In short, while anthropological methods like
participant observation can valuably supplement contemporary debates on climate
change, a truly decolonial approach that more consciously incorporates
polyvocality and reflexivity would have made this contribution more successful.””
