Weber vs Marx on Ideas and Social Change

In The Protestant Ethic & the Spirit of Capitalism (1904), Max Weber makes an
argument that religious beliefs can affect the way people live and influence changes to
society.
This view of the importance of ideas conflicts with Marx’s view of social
change, as expressed in his theory of Historical Materialism. In this paper you will
examine both views over the course of a 1,500 word essay, spread out over three parts.
First: Provide a summary of Weber’s basic argument in The Protestant Ethic & the
Spirit of Capitalism, in regards to the effect religious beliefs have on society. This part
should cover roughly 600-800 words
Second: Consider how Marx would react to Weber’s theoretical argument, based off of
Marx’s own views of historical materialism, his critique of capitalism and his belief that
Communism will be the highest form of society. This part should cover approximately
500-700 words.

Third: In your conclusion, consider how Weber would respond to Marx’s criticisms,
especially in regards to their differing views on social progress. This part should be no
more than 300 words.

As with the prior two papers, you have a 1,500 word limit (approx. S pages typewritten,
12-point font, Times New Roman, 1-inch margins and double-spaced). Please make sure
to include your paper’s word count somewhere on the first page of your paper.
You are expected to only draw from materials from this class, especially the original
texts written by Weber, Marx and Engels. Your grade on this essay will be based on your
ability to accurately detail the theoretical arguments of each theorist, but please keep in
mind that organization and grammar are also important. Do not wait until the last minute
to do this assignment.
If you use only class materials and your own original research findings, there is no need
for a bibliography. However, be sure to use parenthetical documentation for any
references, i.e. (Weber 181) or (Marx 160) for readings, or (Barnes 2021) for lecture.
