Even before the conclusion of World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union were at odds despite being Allies. It is little wonder that the United States, a nation focused on representative democracy and free market capitalism, would have little in common with Russia’s totalitarian government and communist economic system. The defeat of their common Axis enemies left America and Russia as the two strongest powers on the planet. However, the advent of nuclear weapons made a total conflict between the two superpowers unthinkable. Each nation sought to extend its power and influence in a variety of ways. Military alliances, foreign aid, propaganda, diplomacy, and limited conflicts characterized this rivalry known as the Cold War. This struggle dominated the second half of the twentieth century and left effects felt to the present day.
For your initial post, examine and discuss a major aspect of the early Cold War, such as the Berlin Blockade and Airlift, Truman Doctrine, Marshall Plan, NATO and Warsaw Pact, Communist China, or the Korean War. How does America’s containment doctrine inform and influence these Cold War events?
Then, select an early Cold War event other than that which you examined in your initial post. Offer your observations on the Cold War’s influence on American society. Do you see evidence of the effects of the Cold War today?
1. Describe the Korean conflict and how is it relevant today?
2. What was the role of NATO and how is it relevant today?
