For
your journal entry 1, you will do a bit of research on a Mega Sporting
event of your choice. For example, you could choose to look at the
Atlanta 1996 Summer Olympics or your favorite World Cup from say,
Brazil, or examine a recent NCAA Basketball Tournament.
You
will research the success and/or failures of the event according to
four of the Seven principles of Mega Event Syndrome that are discussed
in Muller’s article.

You will analyze the Mega Event based on:
1.The Overpromising Benefits of the games
2. The Underestimation of Costs
3.
Space – Event Takeover = what was built? who was displaced? Is the
venue(s) still in use today in the host city/nation? Is the venue
abandoned?
4.
What were the benefits of the Mega Event? Who profited? Who did not
make any money from the Mega Event being hosted in that city/nation?
Advertising tie-ins? How were the athletes treated?

1. Read the Muller article The Mega Event Syndrome: Why so Much Goes
Wrong in Mega Event Planning. The pdf file of the article is in the
course content section. Pay attention to the following principles that
lead to “Mega Event Syndrome.”

The Underestimation of Costs – Who pays the price hosting the event?
Taxpayers? Who pays for the building of new arenas, stadiums, etc? What
about the cost of additional things like safety, security, protocols for
the Covid-19 pandemic during the games?
3.
Space – Event Takeover = what was built? who was displaced? Is the
venue(s) still in use today in the host city/nation? Is the venue
abandoned?
4.
What were the overall benefits of the Mega Event? Who profited? Who did
not make any money from the Mega Event being hosted in that
city/nation? Did the Mega Event you choose bring pride to the host
city/nation that benefitted them?
Step 2 – Choose a mega event that has happened in the last 15years.
Step
3 – Research the Mega Event and the governing bodies of the Mega Sports
Event you choose – like FIFA if you choose soccer and the
International Olympic Committee (IOC) if looking at an Olympics, NCAA if
you choose basketball, the NFL, etc.
Discuss your research findings of your chosen Mega Sporting Event in about 2 pages – approximately 400 words.
You complete journal entry should be pages (400 word minimum), typed, double spaced and submitted as a Word Document.
