Reformation and Religious Change in Europe:
Required Readings:
Romans, Chapters 1-4
Martin Luther, 95 Theses
Martin Luther, “On Good Works”
Writing Prompt:
Though many influential individuals came before him, Martin Luther is often considered to be the ultimate catalyst for the Protestant Reformation. Throughout his career, Luther challenged the Roman Catholic Church on almost an almost endless number of theological fronts. In particular, he disagreed with Catholics’ assessment of salvation. In other words, they disagreed about how it was that person came to be ‘saved’, that is, attaining the right to eternity in heaven with God the Father.
Using specific examples from the assigned texts, describe some of Luther’s major disagreements with Catholicism. What, according to Luther was the Church doing wrong? What suggestions does he make for improvement? How does your reading of the Book of Romans impact your understanding of the nature of these debates?
Questions for Consideration:
Note: Not all of the below questions must be answered; they are meant, rather, as a guide to get you started.
What are Luther’s primary grievances against the Church?
How does Luther suggest the Church recover from the follies of the past?
What are the key themes of Luther’s 95 Theses? Do you notice any trends or patterns?
What does Luther say about the leadership in the Church? Is it competent or lacking? Explain.
According to Luther, how is it that becomes saved? Does that differ from the Catholic view on the subject?
How do the first four chapters of Romans characterize the nature of salvation? What can you draw from Scripture that helps you understand these debates?
