In the chapter Social and Emotional Development in Infancy and Toddlerhood, which you read this week, a number of really important topics were addressed, including temperament and attachment. In this forum we will discuss both of these topics further and how, as your textbook says, parenting is “bidirectional.”
First, please watch this video on the Circle of Security to get a better understanding of attachment at it’s most basic level: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wpz8m0BFM8 (Links to an external site.)
(If you want more, or a more in-depth, explanation of the Circle of Security you can go here (Links to an external site.).)
Second, here is a video on temperament and all that it involves: https://www.zerotothree.org/resources/159-temperament-what-makes-your-child-tick (Links to an external site.)Please watch it as well.
In some ways, temperament and attachment, bring back up the nature vs. nurture question we have already thought about. So, let’s think about how these two interplay.
What advice would you give to a parent/caretaker, who cares for a child with a temperament that is not a “good fit” with the adult caretaker? How can you explain the importance of attachment to this parent and what advise would you give to him/her based on what you have learned about both temperament and attachment?
