What are ‘algorithmic cultures’? And how does the so-called ‘algorithmic cultures’ shape today’s
data-saturated society and creative media industries? Please use two case studies to illustrate.
GUIDANCE:
Emerging technologies such as big data analytics, artificial intelligence and robotics have changed the
ways we read, move, work, consume and indeed live. Not only have simple and repetitive tasks been
automated, but complex decisions now can also be made more quickly and more accurately via
predictive algorithms. Increasingly, emergent technologies are also being used to support the
implementation of more flexible working practices such as virtual work and gig work.
Some people posit big data and algorithmic governance as the promise of a world yet to come (a
datatopian promise), while the others have had a pessimistic view on a world powered by big data
and AI.
In your essay, you need to define what ‘algorithmic cultures’ are, and critically examine two cases
that demonstrate algorithmic cultures and how they are shaping professional and/or everyday
practices in today’s society AND creative media industries. For example, you can enter the debate
about how emergent technologies (e.g., machine learning, data mining, predictive algorithms,
recommendation engines, search engines) described above are used in creative media industries. Are
they indeed empowering the media workers in different fields, helping making media works better,
more efficiently and more productively, or are simply exploiting and/or undermining us in order to
make a small number of business leaders very wealthy and powerful?
