The last decade of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th saw the city go through massive changes. One was massive influx of immigrants from eastern and southern Europe. A second was even more new infrastructure particularly the building of the subway. The third were as series of social movements (Called the Progressive Movement) led by workers and immigrants to make the city more livable and fairer.
